Passport and Visa Information for International Registrants to an AACA Meeting

International visitors must present a passport or other valid travel document when entering the United States.

Visas are required for most travelers to the U.S. Increased security measures now require visa applications to undergo greater scrutiny than in the past. Because the application and review process can take considerable time, applicants are advised to apply as early as possible (at least 2-3 months) in advance of their travel date.

If you need a visa, you must go to your closest U.S. visa-issuing post for an interview with a Department of State consular officer, which includes a review of your application and supporting documents, and collection of your biometrics (up to 10 digital fingerprints and a digital photograph). This site fully outlines these required documents/credentials. For more information on how long you will have to wait to get an interview appointment and for specific details on visa requirements and application procedures for your country of origin, please visit this site.

Canadian citizens and citizens from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries (currently, 35 countries; see list of countries) can come to the U.S. without a visa provided they meet certain passport requirements. Travelers from all VWP countries must obtain approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to traveling to the U.S. Visitors may apply online for travel authorization via the ESTA web site at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov.

As part of the arrival process into the U.S., all international visitors will experience US-VISIT biometric procedures (collection of digital fingerprints and photographs) prior to their entrance.

The 27th meeting of the AACA will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii in July 2010. We will be meeting jointly with the International Society for Plastination. The postgraduate course to be held at the University of Hawaii on Saturday, July 24th, will be a hands-on plastination experience and is now closed to subscription. Check out the official meeting web site for full information.

Career Development Committee information for the Hawaii meeting

An invitation: The Career Development Committee would like to personally invite all student platform and poster presenters to the Mentor Reception held Monday, July 19th from 5-6:15 pm (just prior to the AACA Welcome Reception at 6:30). The Career Development Committee sponsors this reception along with a fabulous free book raffle as a means to bring together "new" AACA members and “seasoned” AACA members, many who have recently authored an anatomy resource!  At the CDC Reception you will have the opportunity to submit your name for the drawing.  This year we are even raffling a FREE skull replica from Bone Clones!  Around 5:40pm we will draw names for personally signed textbooks and resources from authors who will be on hand to present their gift to you!  You must be present to win!

A reminder: Those students participating in the judged poster and platform presentations need to be aware of time limit the judging committee has placed on “floor time”.  Please note that posters should be summarized in 5 minutes with 2-3 minutes for questions from our judges.  Please note that platform presenters will have 12 minutes to summarize their project with 2-3 minutes for questions.  If you do not show for your assigned platform or poster presentation time you will receive zero points.

Thank you! – we look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones Monday night at 5pm!

Hosting an AACA Meeting

Interested in hosting an AACA annual meeting? Have you wondered what this involves? The .pdf documents linked below outline the preliminary information Executive Council of the AACA needs to have before it can accept an invitation to meet in your area. Why not think about hosting the AACA membership in your city? Our Meeting Manager (Ms. Julie Hewett) takes on the greater part of the responsibilities for hosting a meeting, making it a much less arduous task than it was 5 years ago.

Anatomy in the Third Reich

Public Satellite Symposium on "Anatomy in the Third Reich".

The German Anatomical Society (Anatomische Gesellschaft) will host a public satellite symposium on the topic of "Anatomy in the Third Reich" in Würzburg/Germany on September 29, 2010, from 8.30 to 12.30 a.m. This symposium will take place immediately before the annual workshop of the Anatomical Society. It is our aim (1) to present the results of investigations on the involvement of anatomical institutes in the Nazi dictatorship and (2) to discuss possible future directions in research on this part of our history.

Please find attached a poster announcing the symposium. I would be grateful if you could post it in your institution or forward it to the members of your society, if deemed appropriate by you. The official language of the symposium will be English and German.

If you would like to contribute a short oral presentation or a poster to the symposium, please submit an abstract on the homepage of the Anatomical Society (http://anatomische-gesellschaft.de, "Arbeitstagung Würzburg") or send an abstract directly to me (see email address below) until July 20, 2010. Poster will remain hanging during the symposium and the rest of the workshop.

Prof. Paulsen, editor-in-chief of the journal Annals of Anatomy, has kindly offered to publish contributions on the topic of the meeting in a special issue. If you are interested in submitting a manuscript or have questions regarding the special issue, please contact Prof. Paulsen or myself.

Christoph Redies, MD, PhD, Professor and Director, Institute of Anatomy, University of Jena, Jena/Germany.
